Auto Create SSL for Custom Domains
in review
Mitch Aunger
The biggest roadblock for many in creating a custom domain is that Searchie doesn't create SSL.
Some people can't use Cloudflare (and don't even know what it is 1/2 the time), and they're stuck with a custom domain that throws security errors for the hub user and it looks like phishing. The lower level isn't providing the SSL certificate properly either.
If Searchie provided SSL, maybe this would be a much smoother setup process and more people would use custom domains (which is what they want with branding etc).

I really hope that this is still being considered because I have clients that use SquareSpace, etc, and it's just so much easier to be able to work with the DNS on their platform because if I need to then go set up everything for them in cloudflare and do all that work for them it's not going to be worth the time and money that gets put into it. It's not so easy to just tell people to change to cloudflare and set it all up. For most people it's super techy and can lead to them breaking their websites or a disruption in their network.

Not fully closing, but likely going to be pointing people to CloudFlare for the easiest set up route.

Will McArthur: This is disappointing. We heard from Andrew that this would be complete by last June. Then there was silent running and now this note tells us that we've gone from in development back to in review. What's happening?
Will McArthur
William Beem: We ran into some "gotchas" during development that are going to make things more complicated with this released than with it as sort of a background thing we could help with on a needs basis. Still on the agenda, but other rocks took priority. Especially since it's not really a "must have" with CloudFlare as a viable option.
William Beem
Will McArthur: Understood. Thanks for the insight.

Will McArthur: I empathize with you guys on this. It is so easy to get handled by using cloudflare and having the settings correct. A video screen capture of setting it up would be helpful for those Mitch is referencing.
Will McArthur
Ben Patwa: Hey Ben! Yeah, this is exactly it. We are reviewing our support processes for this and going to introduce some better explanations in the help articles that will make this as easy as it's supposed to be
Mitch Aunger
Ben Patwa: William Beem the problem is some hosting sites like WIX (where people can create domains and already have assets) specifically will NOT support Cloudflare. So I have clients specifically stuck that cannot use searchie as they don't have SSL

Will McArthur: This is likely going to be a deal killer for me. CloudFlare "Business" version for small businesses running a business critical application is $200 per month. The free version has no SLA and requires me to use another service, creating more complexity in management.
For clarity, you are saying you will point people to CloudFlare as the easiest setup route, but I'm reading it as "the ONLY" setup route. Is there another way to get SSL working without having to transfer DNS to CloudFlare?
Will McArthur
Jason Brett: Ah, the SLA is a good point. I believe there are other ways to get it to work without CloudFlare, but at the moment we don't have any support for that set up route. I can ask around in the team for any ideas in the meantime and for confirmation that it does or doesn't work.

This issue has stymied me in the custom domain process so I am looking forward to greater clarity in how to make this work. Thank you so much for your work on this!

Was finally setting up a hub today and am bummed that I can't use a custom domain - I guess I'd rather have a gibbersih URL than a WARNING page for my clients, but I feel like I shouldn't have to have either, considering the $200 monthly payment for this service!

I know this was just moved to in progress a week ago...but any chance you have an update on timing? Days? Weeks? Months?
I'm asking because it has become urgent as I had to remove cloudflare from my domain as it was causing major issues and now my hub is throwing off security warnings to my members:-(

Andrew Ferraccioli: How are we coming on this? Would really, really like to see this happen to make site setup so much easier (especially when using subdomains).

Yes, I agree..I have my hub but want to add the domain, I don't use cloudflare but go daddy. This became overwhelming and now I am stuck with a random domain. I love hubs but really need this to get fixed

I'm not there yet (still setting up my hub), but I know this will be a problem for me as well in the future.
Mitch Aunger
Rafaela Cappai: note, it shouldn't be put off till the end because it can take a while :)
Alison Greer
This was definitely the biggest sticking point for me when creating my hub!
